Farmers Need Help Now, The Breadbasket of Jamaica was Destroyed by Hurricane Melissa
Jamaica's Food Supply Has Just Been Shattered, Help Us Prevent a Food Shortage
Hurricane Melissa has struck the breadbasket of Jamaica.
Most of the farming communities that feed the island have been destroyed — and now is the time for us to help rebuild the agricultural backbone of Jamaica and restore hope.
A food shortage will become a very real threat once the initial relief efforts end. Stronger hurricanes, longer droughts, and rising global pressures are causing other countries to hold on to their own food supplies. Jamaica currently imports over US $1.6 billion in food each year, leaving us dangerously exposed when global supplies tighten. We must strengthen local food production now — while recovery efforts are still active and momentum is still alive.
Across the western parishes, once-thriving farming communities have been devastated by Hurricane Melissa. Fields that once sustained families, markets, and schools are gone. Generations of farming knowledge are fading as agriculture becomes harder, riskier, and less rewarding. Many farmers are on the brink of walking away. If they do, Jamaica will become more dependent on food imports than ever before.
But together, we can stop that from happening.
Farm Up Jamaica is on a mission to reignite the spirit of agriculture — empowering young people to become Jamaica’s new Soldiers for Food Security. Over the last 12 years, we have trained more than 1,000 youth who are ready to help rebuild the communities hit hardest by this disaster. We will rise again — stronger than before — using Regenerative Climate-Smart Agriculture (RCSA) techniques that protect our soil, reduce water use, and secure our food future against the next hurricane.
By training farmers, restoring family farms, and rebuilding local food production with climate-smart methods, we will turn devastated lands back into thriving fields.
The future of Jamaica’s food security begins here — with us — united, resilient, and homegrown

How We Work?
- Farm Up Jamaica visits farming communities to do a feasibility study and soil test.
- We decide what crops can be produced on a large scale based on soil test results.
- We partner with Jamaicans who live abroad and donors/partners from around the world to raise funds to cultivate enough land to grow crops.
- We train local farmers, in Farm Up Jamaica’s Regenerative Climate Smart Agriculture (RCSA) techniques, to cultivate consistent crops to supply the market.
- Under Farm Up Jamaica direction, community co-op farmers, our staff members and volunteers, clear, prepare and cultivate land. We use sustainable regenerative climate-smart technology which requires 60% less water throughout the farming process.
- The farms are maintained and harvested with the necessary management and oversight.
- We assist in harvesting, grading, packing and logistics to ensure the product gets to the designated communities/markets.
The Farm Up Jamaica program is created to have local farmers and youth train and work together. The crop is planted and harvested on a scheduled basis. Distressed farming communities are able to create new livelihoods when crops are harvested. Jamaican diaspora, donors, and partners can finally have a measurable lasting impact on each community and the food security of Jamaica.
